It was a very sad day for me when I heard of the passing of John Entwistle. It's sad in a number of respects: firstly because he is a great hero of mine who single handedly defined what it means to be a rock bass player and secondly because it surely marks the beginning of the end for his generation. He was 57 years old and while The Who had found a new energy, their days and those of their contemporaries who emerged from the 60s beat generation are numbered. As one who watches those around pass on, one wonders when one's own time will be up.
